IN A SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT ahead of the forthcoming NUJ National Delegates Conference in Imo State, outgoing President Chris Isiguso (pictured above) has instructed the credentials committee to disqualify several candidates due to mounting legal issues and accusations of misconduct. Among those targeted are Comrades Wole Shokunbi, Edward Ogude, and Garba Mohammed.
Sources indicate that Isiguso convened discussions with the credentials committee's leadership immediately following the screening process in Abuja. It is reported that Comrade Shokunbi, former chairman of Ogun NUJ, and Comrade Ogude, former chairman of Delta council, are being disqualified to facilitate the unopposed candidacy of Mrs. Bimbo Oyetunde from Edo council.
Additionally, Garba Mohammed, former chairman of Kaduna council, is also facing disqualification for the NUJ President position. Isiguso is believed to be concerned about vote-splitting among candidates from North Central, fearing it could benefit his preferred choices from other regions.
Committee members have noted that all candidates meet the constitutional criteria, yet pressures to disqualify them appear rooted in personal grievances and strategic interests related to Isiguso's political future. Claims of financial mismanagement, including allegations of personal enrichment through union funds, have further complicated the situation.
This internal conflict comes on the heels of legal challenges against Isiguso, with members questioning his eligibility and actions in office. Critics point out that his favored candidate for Deputy National President, Mrs. Oyetunde, has far less experience in union politics compared to her rivals.
The unfolding events raise serious concerns about the integrity of the upcoming elections and the future direction of the NUJ.
