OGUN NUJ Urges Fed. Govt. to Rehabilitate Abeokuta-Lagos Road, Others

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State, has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to take undertake Rehabilitation or reconstruction of  Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway and Sango-Idiroko international roads without delay as the two major roads in Ogun State have become unpassable and nightmare to motorists and road users plying the routes.

This was stated in a communique signed and made available by Comrade Kunle Ewuoso, State Secretary to journalists in Abeokuta today. 

According to the communique issued at the end of its July meet at Iwe Irohin Press Centre, Abeokuta,, amongst other resolutions, the Congress joined Ogun State government to appreciate the federal government for the award of contract to rehabilitate 100km-long Ilaro-Papalanto-Sagamu Road, adding that  the government at the centre should not relent its efforts to fixing  all road infrastructure in the country.

 Comrade Kunle Ewuoso, State Secretary of NUJ in the State stated that the Congress also called on the governments at Federal and State level to urgently find lasting effective solution to the security challenges facing the country, saying daily killings, kidnapping, and banditry must abate forthwith.

The .Ogun State NUJ frowns at  the disqualification of ten Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Tokyo Olympic 2020 was  raised and the Congress, berating the Nigerian officials  for their negligence to fulfilling all the Olympics protocols before heading to Japan. It, however,  recommended that the government in future should forestall similar occurrence. 

The Congress, According to Ewuoso, commended both the Ogun State government, Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, OGSIEC, and other stakeholders for the peaceful conduct of the recently concluded local government elections, but calling on government and the electoral umpire to improve on  voter education so as to reduce voters aparthy in the future elections.

In another vein, the Congress of Ogun State NUJ, according to the communique, mandated the Comrade Soji Amosu-led State Executive Committee to ratify and re-inaugute the Chapels which the elections of their officers were conducted by the illegal Caretaker Committee before the February 24 judgement of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, NICN sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, adding that decisions on SWAN and NAWOJ would be taken by the Congress in the August meet while urging the Property and Chapels' Election Review Committees to expedite actionand submit their reports for consideration. 

1. The monthly Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council was held at Iwe Irohin, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta on Thursday, July 29,  2021, where the activities of the union were discussed as openly as possibly, with members evaluating the well being and activities of the union
After exhaustive deliberations, Congress agreed:

1.That members should endeavour to report the activities of the union in their various media particularly the on-line media.

2.The Union lauded the organization of the Democracy Day lecture for its success, but enjoined members to always prioritise union's events by attending punctually and commitedly.

3.The issue of vacant positions in the council, such as the Vice Chairman, Treasurer and the Financial Secretary, the Congress agreed they should be filled with members offering various ways to go about it. At the end of a hot debate the executive promised to fill them by the most democratic means.

6.The report of the Property and Chapels' Election Review Committee were discussed and the Congress suggested that members of the committees should expedite action, concluding that Chapels whose elections were conducted by the caretaker committee before the court judgment should be ratified/re inaugurated by the present authentic executive, except for SWAN and NAWOJ whose review would be communicated to the members during the next Congress.

7) The Congress commended the various stakeholders for the peaceful conduct of the poll. However, it called on government and the electoral umpire to improve on  voter education so as to reduce voters aparthy in the future elections.

8) The Congress also called on the government at Federal and State level to urgently look into the Security challenges facing the country.

9) The infrastructural decay bedeviling the country and the State in particular was also discussed. The Congress thanked the government for the approval to rehabilitate Ilaro Papalanto- Sagamu interchange road, while it also called government attention to other dilapidated roads in the State.
10) The Congress particularly called on the Federal Government repair all Federal roads in the state, especially Lagos/Abeokuta and Sango/Idiroko roads, while it should dualise Abeokuta/Ibadan road.
11) The issue of disqualification of Ten Nigerian athletes at Tokyo Olympic 2020 was  raised and the Congress frowned at the development , berated the Nigerian officials  and recommended that the government should always ensure round pegs were put in round holes in order to forestall future occurrence of this shameful act.
