In a surprising turn of events, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Ogun State has officially declared the Gbagura Regency Council as illegal. This announcement came after a petition was submitted by a legal counsel from the Afolabi Fashanu & Co Chambers in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The petition, dated March 22, 2024, raised concerns about the legality of the Gbagura Regency Council and its related matters. In response, the Honorable Hamzat, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stated that the Oba and Chiefs Law of 2021 does not recognize the existence of a Regency Council.

In a letter issued by the Director of Chieftaincy Affairs, Aderinwale, M. A., it was emphasized that the Gbagura Regency Council, along with all its associated matters, must cease to exist from this point forward.

These developments were triggered by the actions of Chief Bode Mustapha, the Chairman of the Gbagura Regency Council and a former member of the Federal House of Representatives. Mustapha had recently taken the controversial decision to dismiss the appointed Secretary of the Gbagura Regency Council, Chief Nurudeen Olaleye, and unilaterally appointed his own Secretary to the unauthorized council.

To gather further insight, we reached out to Chief Bode Mustapha for a comment. Although he requested to be texted, he did not respond to our questions before the publication deadline.

The declaration of the Gbagura Regency Council as illegal has raised eyebrows among local residents and stakeholders. This controversial move is likely to spark discussions and debates within both legal and political circles in Ogun State. The implications of this decision remain to be seen as interested parties await further developments in the ongoing saga.
