THE SECRETARY of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Bunmi Adigun (pictured above), has been remanded in a correctional facility after his arraignment before a Magistrate Court 1 sitting in Abeokuta on Friday, December 19, 2025, over allegations bordering on assault, attempted kidnapping, obstruction of police duty and related offences.
Adigun was arraigned alongside one Aderibigbe Lekan (28) on an eight-count charge preferred against them by the Ogun State Police Command. The court, after taking their pleas, granted Adigun bail in the sum of ₦1.5 million with two sureties, but he was unable to perfect the bail conditions and was consequently ordered to be remanded in custody pending further proceedings. The case was adjourned to January 21, 2026, for continuation of trial.
Court documents revealed that the charges include attempted kidnapping of a police officer, willful and unlawful assault on a serving officer, obstruction of police officers in the lawful execution of their duties, conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, unlawful detention and deprivation of liberty, malicious damage, failure to produce valid vehicle and traffic documents, and unlawful possession of a vehicle suspected to be stolen, contrary to provisions of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006, and the Ogun State Road Traffic Law, 2017.
The charges stem from a late-night incident at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at a police stop-and-search checkpoint in front of the Kemta Divisional Police Headquarters, Abeokuta.
According to police sources, Adigun was driving a blue Toyota Camry with registration number OG 16 A43 when he was flagged down by officers on routine duty. He allegedly became confrontational and disorderly when approached and reportedly refused to comply with an instruction to drive into the police station for further checks.
The situation allegedly escalated when Police Constable Adebayo Okikijesu, who entered the vehicle in the course of his lawful duty to enforce compliance, was said to have been driven away against his will. The officer reportedly sustained an injury to his arm during the incident, raising alarm among officers at the checkpoint.
Police sources said the vehicle was intercepted about 200 metres away from the scene after the intervention of Kehinde Adebayo, a driver attached to a retired Superintendent of Police, Ade Akiti, who pursued and blocked the Camry, leading to Adigun’s arrest and immediate detention.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, acknowledged the arrest and arraignment of the NUJ official but declined to give extensive details, stating that investigations are ongoing.
Repeated efforts to obtain comments from the Chairman of the Ogun State NUJ Council were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The case has continued to generate widespread reactions within media and civil society circles in Ogun State, given Adigun’s position as a senior official of the journalists’ union and the serious nature of the allegations against him.
The prosecution is being handled by the Ogun State Police Command, Kemta Division.
