A FORMER GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE, Olusegun Osoba, has declared that a godfather–godson relationship in politics does not have to degenerate into conflict, provided it is anchored on mutual respect and non-interference.
Speaking bluntly during an exclusive interview with journalists in Abeokuta, Osoba described his relationship with the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, as cordial, respectful and devoid of political tension.
The elder statesman explained that the much-debated issue of godfatherism has not surfaced as a problem in Ogun State because both men have maintained harmony and clear boundaries since the inception of the current administration in 2019.
According to Osoba, he has deliberately refrained from interfering in the affairs of the government under Governor Abiodun. He stressed that at no time has he suggested names for appointments or pressured the governor to accommodate any individual in public office.
“I respect him as the Chief Executive Officer of the state and the current father of the state,” Osoba stated. “I give him that respect, and he reciprocates it with respect for me.”
The former governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress maintained that the stability in their personal relationship has translated into broader peace and political harmony across Ogun State.
Osoba emphasised that when mentorship in politics is guided by restraint, dignity and reciprocal regard, it strengthens governance rather than undermines it, offering what he described as a practical remedy to the toxic brand of godfatherism that has troubled political systems elsewhere.
