THE MANAGEMENT of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun
state, has re-opened the Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit of the Centre to
the public.
It should recalls that the Accident and Emergency (A&E)
unit was temporarily shut down on Saturday, May 2, 2020 on the death of
Covid-19 positive patients to allow for a thorough decontamination of the complex.
Patients were being attended to by the Unit's healthcarers since
Monday May 11, while the Medical Director was equally sighted at the facility to
ensure smooth discharge of services to patients.
The Centre management has introduced some changes in the procedure
of admitting new patients into the unit. Unlike before, new safety measures
have been introduced for both the staff and patients.
The new measures, according to Segun Orisajo,
the Head, FMC's Public Relations & Information, include the
institution of an algorithm/protocol for the Unit staff before admitting any
patient into the Accident and Emergency Unit.
Similarly, a triaging system would also be applied to identify
the level of exposure and suspicion of all patients.
Speaking on this, a senior medical officer in the unit said: "Under
the new arrangement, no patient can come and move straight into the A&E Unit
without being fully assessed whether to go in or be attended to elsewhere
within the hospital facilities."
Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, the Medical Director, at the reopening
of the Unit, reassured the staff of the Unit of the Management's concern for
their safety.
He said: "I wish to appreciate you and salute your courage
as frontliners in the care of our patients.
"Let me assure you again that (the) Management is fully
aware of the risks of this job and that is why we are decisive in our efforts
at ensuring that you're all protected.
"You will recall that between last week and this morning,
we had received two consignments of Personnal Protective Equipment ( PPE) from
the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
"I have been assured that (the) stock will be replenished
before we exhaust the supply."
He urged the staff and patients to close to ignore the lies and
rumours going round, saying the carriers were agents of retrogression,
who had sold themselves to creating panic and anxiety among staff and the
public.
Also, some newly admitted patients who went through triaging
system (pictured above) expressed gratitude to the Management for the early
reopening of the unit. They also commended the Centre for the new measures to
give them adequate medical care.
In another vein, the Centre took delivery, Monday, of another
consignment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s).
The latest items, which were donated by Nigeria Centre for
Disease Control, Abuja, included surgical gowns, oxygen concentrators,
protective masks, examination latex gloves, digital thermometers, medical
disposable coverall, and medical surgical mask.
Speaking, also at the occasion, the Medica Director, Prof
Adewale Musa-Olomu said the present administration was matching its words with
action.
"We told our people that another consignment of PPEs would
come to the Centre after we received some last week. This morning, (Monday)
those expected PPEs had arrived.”
He reiterated the commitment of his administration to the safety
of the workers and patients, adding that the arrival of new consignment of PPEs
the staff need not entertain any fear while discharging his or her duties.
