Open University Matriculates 11 Custodial Centre Inmates in Ogun

NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA (NOUN) matriculated eleven inmates of Ibara Custodial Center, (the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS) Ogun State Command on Tuesday November 2, 2021.


This was made known in a press statement signed by the image maker of the Ibara Custodial Center, Ogun State Command, Mr. Victor Oyeleke  and made available to thedispatch.


According to the release the 11 inmates were admitted to study Business Administration, Political Science, Criminology and Security Studies,  Peace and Conflict Resolution and Public Administration.


It should be recalled that Tuesday matriculation makes it the third that Abeokuta Custodial Center would be presenting its inmates for further studies in the National Open University of Nigeria,NOUN.


Controller General of Corrections Haliru Nababa who was represented by the  Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command Abdurasheed Alimi, implored the matriculating students and other inmates to take advantage of the opportunity given to them to add value to their lives.


Haliru Nababa reiterated that the occasion underscores the core  mandate of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), which's to reform, rehabilitate, and integrate all its inmates back to the society.  


He, therefore, assured that  NCoS would continue to deliver on its mandate by enabling inmates to acquire academic and vocational skills as well as providing them with psychosocial support programmes


The Comptroller General also noted that about 3,000 inmates are currently undergoing various academic programs at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and other institutions of higher learning in Nigeria which are in partnership with the correctional service.


He appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for his support for the Service and other development partners.


The Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters represented by Dr Segun Adenuga, the Director, Abeokuta Study Center, assured the inmates of NOUN management commitment to provide enabling study environment that would make the completion of their study seamless, peaceful and safe.


While admonishing to be good ambassadors of NOUN, the Vice-chancellor challenged the matriculating inmate students to be studious, thirst for knowledge, and  become a generation of the pride of Africa who would transform the continent after their release from custody. 


Professor Olufemi Peters  expressed  gratitude of the NOUN management to NCoS for its cooperation with NOUN and specially commended the  efforts of ASC 1 Awesu Abdulhakeem, the Welfare and Education Desk Officer of the Custodial Center for his commitment to make the study seamless.


Dignatories at the third matriculation ceremony included the Director of Mass Literary, Ogun State, Alhaji Mikail Lawal who represented the Commissioner for Education Ogun State,  Pofessor Abayomi Arigbabu.


This ceremony has brought the number of inmates of Ibara Custodial Center studying various degree programs at the NOUN to sixty one.(61) including two Masters Degree students.
