An insurance guru and philanthropist, Olubiyi Otegbeye, amidst pomps and cetemony Moday, May 23, formally declared his intention to challenge the incumbent governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun in the APC governorship primary election coming up on Thursday, May 26. 


Otegbeye , addressing State delegates and supporters during his declaration, vowed to fight poverty and insecurity in the State if elected the governor of the State in 2023.


The governorship aspirant popularly known as BOT (Building Opportunity for Tomorrow) is the founder and Managing Director , Providence Trust Insurance Company and the former House of Representatives candidate during the 2019 general  elections further pledged to unify the State through purposeful leadership. 


He canvassed the delegates to cast their votes for him as he remains the most capable aspirant to rescue the State from insecurity, poor economic conditions, and is capable to turn around the fortunes of the State.


Otegbeye lamented the high rate of poverty in the State, which according to him has prevented the people from reaching their potentials, promising to take 100 households every month from poverty. He added that by the policy and programmes of his government would have poverty alleviation ingredients thereby each year of his reign would lift 40% poor households from wants.


He said, "If by the grace of God and the wisdom of our distinguished delegates here present, I win the nomination of our party, I will be offering the unifying political leadership that Ogun state urgently needs and which our great party will be proud of."


Speaking during the official declaration of his interest to vie for the State number one seat, Senator Mrs. Iyabo Veronica Anisulowo acknowledged the capacity and intelligence of Biyi Otegbeye, a lawyer and insurer, adding that the aspirant has integrity and his character is unblemished.


Anisulowo said the Yewa people have convinced the people who won't to say Yewa has no quality people and Yewa people have no money. She noted Yewa people have quality people and have money.


The former Minister of State for Education, Senator Anisulowo canvassed the Ogun State electorate to vote for Otegbeye. She added that Biyi's mother was from Ijebu North Local Government area. She also said for 13 years Biyi's mother worked in Abeokuta as a teacher, while Biyi began his post primary education from Reverend Kuti Memorial Secondary School, Isabo, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.


Otegbeye, who speaks impeccable Ijebu dialect, said "no Ijebu person is more than himself as apart from the fact that my mother was from Ijebu Igbo I began my primary education from the area".


Abdulkadri Akinlade, former governorship candidate on the platform of APM in 2019 governorship election , who's now also vying for governorship on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, was present at the Biyi's official declaration ceremony.


Akinlade said democracy should not be seen as do or die affairs, saying once a candidate has emerged others who contested in the same election should embrace one another. He said he had attended his brother co-contestant in that spirit.


Chief Derin Adebiyi led scores of SIA team to the official declaration at OK Event Centre. Senator Ibikunle Amosun, an APC presidential aspirant and former governor of Ogun State was eulogised for his political sagacity and devotion to see a Yewa man emerges as the governor of Ogun State.


Amongst those who spoke during the august ceremony were Chief Mrs. Gbolabo Ogunsan, former Chairperson, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Lemboye and others across Other three Senatorial districts.
