A PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY prominent chieftain in Ogun State has strongly condemned the spate of political violence unleashe the electorate at various polling units in about 15 local government areas in Ogun State during the governorship election.
Comrade Segun Sowunmi who spoke to reporters shortly after the end of voting, yesterday said the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ogun State and its governorship candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun deliberately employed violence at polling units where they were losing in order to get the votes in such polling units cancelled.
Sowunm, the former governorship aspirant on the platform of PDP, said the employment of violence was attempt to disenfranchise the State electorate, describing it as very barbaric I 21st century.
He said snatching of ballot boxes, shooting sporadically and unleashing axe and matches on the electorate were not only attempts to deliberately distrupt electoral process, they were also aimed at cancelling people's decisions to freely elect their governor.
Segun Sowunmi did not hide his feeling to blame this act of violence on election day, saying with the level of security canopy the security agencies supposed erected such violent disruption could be staged by politicians who were afraid of their shadows.
In another vein, Sowunmi frowned at the use of tribalism by the Yoruba in Lagos State to scare the Igbo Lagos residents from exercising their civic rights.
According to him, people should not be seeing as non-indegenes in their own country where they do their businesses and pay taxes, most especially during elections.
He said:"Constitutionally, every individual is protected under the Nigeria Constitution to freely move and live in any part of the country. hence he or she is a citizen of Nigeria".
Sowunmi said the mute attitude of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the tribal campaign against the IBO residents of Lagos State was indicative of his future administration, adding that his refusal to utter a word on series of threat and unholy behaviour metted on Ibos in Lagos State.
“I am disappointed in the silence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the so called President-elect in Nigeria who supposed to be a father to all Nigerians including the Igbos.
“It is also very disgusting that at this century we are witnessing our governorship Election characterized by shooting of gun sporadically.”
