IN A SIGNIFICANT STEP TOWARDS enhancing the safety of educational institutions in Ogun State, the state government, in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has launched a School Protection Squad (SPS).
This initiative was officially inaugurated during a stakeholders’ forum held in Abeokuta, focusing on strengthening community resilience against security threats in schools under the theme "Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Community in the Protection of Education."
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, praised the leadership of the NPF for their proactive approach to addressing rising insecurity in schools. He emphasized the critical need for safeguarding educational environments for the future growth of the nation. Abiodun advocated for a collaborative approach to security that includes all stakeholders, law enforcement, and community participation.
He stated, “It is not just sufficient to create a secure environment; we must build resilience for both response and recovery from security threats.”
The Governor also highlighted his administration’s ongoing efforts to bolster security across the state through collaborations with federal and state agencies, local security outfits, and community involvement.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade, acknowledged the state government's dedication to school protection and highlighted the Federal Government's Safe-School project as a critical priority.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, shared that the Force is working on implementing preventive measures and fostering a safety-oriented culture within educational institutions. This includes comprehensive assessments and training programs aimed at equipping educators, administrators, and security personnel with the skills needed to identify and respond to potential threats.
Additionally, representatives from the traditional leadership, including Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewa and Oba Adeleke Kuoye, pledged their full support for the security initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety of schools and pupils in Ogun State.
This inauguration marks a pivotal moment in promoting a safer educational environment for students and educators in the State, fostering a collaborative effort towards a secure future for education in Nigeria.
