A BILL PROPOSING the creation of three additional states in the South-West region has been introduced in the House of Representatives. The bill, sponsored by Rt. Hon Busayo Oluwole Oke of Osun State, seeks the creation of Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, and Ife-Ijesa States.
The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended)”, aims to amend the First Schedule, Part I of the Constitution to include the new states and reduce the number of local government areas.
According to Hon. Oke, Ife-Ijesa State would comprise 11 LGAs, including Atakunmosa East, Atakunmosa West, Boluwaduro, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ife South, Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Oboku, and Oriade. In a letter to the Clerk of the House, Oke expressed his intention to move the bill in the House for further legislative action.
If the bill is successful, the South-West region would surpass the North-West as the region with the most states in Nigeria. However, the bill must be supported by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and approved by at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly.
Currently, the South-West is made up of six states, including Ondo, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the bill in the House of Representatives.
