THE 18TH NATIONAL COUNCIL ON TRANSPORTATION (NCT) kicked off in Abeokuta, Ogun State with a focus on enabling innovations and technologies for sustainable transportation. The event, which was originally scheduled for 2023 but postponed due to administrative changes, saw the gathering of transportation stakeholders, government officials, and experts in the field.
The theme of this year's council, "Enabling Innovations and Technologies for Sustainable Transportation: Tackling the Energy Challenges," highlights the importance of addressing critical issues within the transportation sector through strategic actions and policies. The event also aims to prioritize innovative technologies that enhance transportation systems' affordability, accessibility, safety, security, and environmental sustainability.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Marine and Blue Economy Mr. Olufemi Michael Oloruntola, commended the commitment of states and stakeholders from the private sector in advocating for the deployment of innovative technologies and alternative energy sources in the transportation sector.
The gathering would focus on reviewing the National Land Transport Policy (NLTP) and discussing issues related to rail, land transportation, urban mobility, taxation, and other pertinent subjects.
The 5-day event, which would be graced by the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince (Dr.) Dapo Abiodun, CON, and Minister for Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali on its fourth day - Friday ,was being attended by Commissioners for Transport and their Permanent Secretaries from the 36 States and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and other dignitaries in the transport sector, aims to devise policies and strategies that foster sustainable transport development, enhance the welfare of Nigerians, create job opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.
The Technical Session of the council would not follow the usual patterns as participants would engage in discussions and generate quality recommendations with implementable timeframes. The event is expected to drive a commitment to meeting the mandates set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali.
The event organisers expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Ogun State for their hospitality and called for a genuine spirit of collaboration among participants to ensure productive discussions and outcomes during the council meeting.
